Book Reviews

I loved reading Quill – Kevin Rixon’s clever use of language and humour brings alive this exciting tale of good versus evil set in London during the height of WW2. Narrated in the colourful and insightful voice of twelve year old Jim Booker, Quill draws you in until you can almost see, smell and feel the ruined streets of London – from a boy’s eye view. Everything a boy’s imagination can produce appears in Jim’s fight to save himself, his brother Tom, and their mum, from Frank – a German spy, but also from a bigger evil – the forces of hell. With the help of Gilead, an angel, Jim learns that the only force that can really help him is the power of God.

THE FORBIDDEN ROOM-

The writing has enormous energy, humor, and vividness. The setting is so vivid and the details of the characters’ lives are so precise that the setting is a character in its own right.

The author has an amazing imagination. The characters are lovable, believable, funny, and brave. There is humor and spunk in every line.

The author has a fabulous imagination and has created World War II bombed-out London with such flair it feels almost like a theme park. The characters are gutsy, funny, endearingly awkward, and totally lovable.

The author has a fabulous imagination, the characters are totally endearing, and reading this manuscript was a real pleasure.

A plunge into the action, a meticulously created sense of time and place, fully developed characters, plenty of action, and both a petty villain and the real evil enemy.
